On a soporific day in late summer on the continent, there can be no lovelier a place than Lucca. One of the lesser known Tuscan towns, the walled city is a less tourist orientated and commercial place to be than buzzy Florence or heaving Pisa. If you want to stroll around the Piazza dell’Anfiteatro, see the gorgeous Renaissance architecture or simply eat ice cream, Lucca has a much richer, more authentically Italian atmosphere. Surveying the Lucchese landscape from atop the medieval walls, the warm ochre rooftops and lines of trees the beauty is clear to see. Renting a bike is the best way to see the city. Can you think of anywhere lovelier for a day away from the crowds?
