Whether or not you’ve traveled to the Golden State, it’s difficult to think of California without calling balmy beaches, palm trees and sunshine to mind. And for good reason. California averages three hundred days of sunshine a year; no wonder so many celebrities call it home! As much as I love living in England (hello cream teas, wellies, British accents, and castles!), the rain and frequent dreary skies are enough to make the most indoor person crave a little warmth and sun. If traveling to Cali isn’t in the budget this year (not in mine!), fear not. While grey and rainy days are yet very much part of our backdrop, why not lift your spirits by infusing California chic into your wardrobe? Celebrities shouldn’t have all the fun.
Hailing from the Midwest, flights to Los Angeles are a lovely three hours away, and I’ve had the opportunity to soak in a string of bright, summery days in Cali. On my first trip to California, I visited San Diego and LA, and remember feeling terribly pasty and bland in comparison to the bronzed and fashionable Cali girls. Fortunately, I’m a quick learner and will say that when I revisited the City of Angels over the 4th of July, my sister and I fit right in. Sure it helps that we’re natural blondes, but we were asked for directions more than once.

#1: Over-sized sunglasses. This is a must! Shield your lookers from the sun, add a bit of mystery to your persona, and who knows? You might even be mistaken for a celeb! I love these tortoise style shades with the wide rims. Stylish, fun, and a steal!
#2: COLOR. Unless you live in a tropical climate, we all know more rain and puddles await, so energize your day by adding pops of color to your wardrobe. I’m currently loving shades of yellow and orange, but if you want to go for the ‘under-stated’ look, pastels are huge. Style colorful trousers or shorts with a simple white tee, add a statement necklace, and head out the door.
#3: Maxi dresses. Nothing says California better than a flowy dress, be it floral print or one bright hue. Maxi dresses further embody LA cool because they are effortless. You don’t need to worry about matching your top and bottom, simply throw on a denim jacket and you’re set. This blue sleeveless maxi from River Island is just what you need to bring the beach a little closer.
#4: Denim cut-offs. If you don’t already own a pair, consider making one with a pair of jeans you no longer wear. Denim cut-offs are endlessly versatile and fun. Like your favorite pair of jeans, denim cut-offs will go with anything in your closest. I particularly like them styled with a three-quarter sleeve light sweater, but the options are endless.
See? Celebrities don’t have all the fun.
